Safety First

Have a blast. Have it safely.

Fireworks are an American tradition — and hours of family fun when they’re handled right. Here’s what our staff wants every customer to know before lighting anything.

The Essentials

Before you light
a single fuse.

01

Adults only. Fireworks burn hot and should only be handled and lit by adults — never let kids light or handle them.

02

No alcohol. Don’t drink while lighting or handling fireworks. Impairment is how misuse and injuries happen.

03

Know your local laws. Follow state and municipal rules, and read every warning label before you light anything.

04

Use a hard, flat surface. Grass isn’t stable enough for upright items — use a board if that’s all you’ve got.

05

Clear the area. Keep spectators well back — roughly 30 feet for ground items, 100 yards for aerial products — and away from buildings and dry brush.

06

Light with distance. Use a punk, flare, or extended lighter — never a match held close by hand.

07

One at a time. Never light multiple items simultaneously.

08

Handle duds carefully. If something doesn’t fire, wait at least 5 minutes, then soak it in water. Bring it back to us for a replacement — don’t try to relight it.

09

Keep water nearby. A hose, bucket, or extinguisher should always be within reach, with one person assigned to watch for fire.

10

Watch the wind. Light with the wind blowing away from spectators, and pause if conditions shift.

11

Never use as weapons. Don’t aim, point, or throw fireworks at people or property — ever.

12

Store them properly. Keep fireworks in a cool, dry place, and dispose of spent items safely.

13

Outdoors only. Never use fireworks indoors, under any circumstances.

14

Buy from a licensed dealer. Reliable dealers only carry products that meet U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission standards.

15

Wear safety glasses. Especially if you’re the one lighting the show.

16

Think about pets. The noise and light can badly spook animals — bring them inside or move them well away.

Know the Law

What’s actually
legal in Wisconsin.

Fireworks novelties are legal for use on private property under Wisconsin state law. Some items require a permit, and individual municipalities can set their own local ordinances — always check with yours before your show.

Know Before You Go.

Read the local ordinances, grab safety glasses, and let’s have a great show.
